About Shayan

Shayan Kamil is a researcher, architectural engineer, and Chevening alumna with an MSc in Advanced Sustainable Design from the University of Edinburgh, where her research focused on applying sustainable design principles to the reconstruction of post-conflict cities. A co-founder and co-director of Shaghaf Team, here she advances environmental justice, sustainable development, and community resilience in her home city of Kirkuk through community engagement and grassroots initiatives. Shayan is deeply committed to the intersection of environmental justice, women’s empowerment, and sustainability, all mutually reinforcing drivers of social equity. Shayan, through her important work with other prestigious organizations, has contributed to regional discourse on climate justice, including speaking at a roundtable on Just Energy Transition, co-organized by the Arab Reform Initiative during the Yemen International Forum III, and leading discussions on pollution and environmental degradation in Kirkuk at the Sulaimani Forum 8. Her work continues to emphasize evidence-based policy and community-led approaches to Iraq’s environmental and urban challenges.
